Cement is a binder used to hold together sand and aggregates to create mortar or concrete. Natural cements have been in use throughout history, but what we consider to be modern cement was invented in the 19th century, often called Ordinary Portland Cement. Several formulations have been invented since then, including sulphate-resistant cements that withstand contact with clay-rich soils and fast-setting cements for when speed is of the essence.
Ordinary Portland Cement was officially renamed to Portland Cement CEM I in 2000. While this is still the most commonly used cement for bulk supply the packaged market has moved to using CEM II, which is also known as low carbon cement. CEM II is ground with additional material so that there is less cement clinker relative to the mix. If using an admixture be sure to check whether it is intended to be used with CEM I or CEM II.
We stock Rugby bagged cements from Cemex, as well as Postfix Concrete mix from Hanson.
