Concrete guide
Our volumetric trucks are effectively a mobile concrete plant, available across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.
If you require small quantities of concrete or 8m3+ we are able to provide you with high quality concrete to whatever your required specification. Our modern volumetric trucks have compartments for Sand, Aggregate, Water and Cement.
When the truck arrives on your site, it will begin to mix the concrete you require. The truck can mix at a rate of 60m3 per hour and is able to carry approximately 8 m3 before returning to base to be refilled. The materials are added in âhandfulsâ via a timed-release system into the mixing auger where they are mixed, and water is added to allow effective hydration. The whole process is incredibly fast. From initiation to discharge only takes around 5-10 seconds!
Our experienced drivers can manoeuvre the truck to allow discharge directly into the foundation or floor area to be poured. Where this is not possible, a wheelbarrow can be filled within seconds.
How much does concrete cost?
When deciding where to buy your ready mix concrete, you need to consider a number of factors.
- The cost of the material.
- The âPart Load Chargesâ to be applied
- The length of time required to discharge
- How certain you are of the quantity required.
Many ready mix concrete companies who deliver in a barrel mixer truck will charge for a part load charge for the cubic meters not carried, i.e if the truck can hold 7.5m3 but you only require 2.5m3, you will pay extra for the 5m3 not carried. In many cases, the cost of this will be ÂŁ70-90 per m3 not carried.
In the example of requiring 2.5m3, the part load charges may equate to more than the cost of the actual concrete.
Be aware of waiting time charges and when they commence, especially if you need a while to empty the truck. The amount of time between the concrete being mixed in a ready mix plant and being placed must be kept to a minimum to avoid the concrete beginning to dry out and become poor quality.
If you are uncertain of the total amount of concrete you require, you should be careful against using ready mix concrete from a barrel mixer truck as you will incur substantial charges for requiring a small amount extra or sending a small amount back to be disposed of.Volumetric trucks are a great solution as there are no part load charges, the concrete is manufactured on site so is âfreshâ at your site and you only buy what exactly you need, therefore no hidden extra costs.

DO YOU OFFER A BARROW SERVICE?
No, unfortunately we do not. We can manoeuvre our truck and add an additional chute to extend the reach of the truck to bring it as close as possible to where it is required. You can use your own barrow though.
CAN I HIRE CONCRETING EQUIPMENT?
Yes, GPH Tool & Plant Hire have the largest range of concrete equipment in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire available for hire.
WHAT TYPE OF TRUCKS DO YOU OPERATE?
We operate Armcon Duralight Volumetric Trucks, which are the most modern trucks on the market. They are operated by a highly sophisticated onboard computer system which ensure the quality of the concrete is as high as possible. The vehicles can carry up to 8m3 on one load.
Some volumetric truck operators are not legally required to operate their vehicles as HGVâs, instead operating them as pieces of Plant. Our trucks are fully serviced and maintained to the same high standard as the rest of the GPH transport fleet.
WHAT ADDITIVES ARE USED?
We do not use plasticiser in our concrete mixes, instead choosing to offer a blend of high quality gravel, cement and water to a level in which ensures our mixes remain well within the allowable water cement ratios. We are able to offer Air Entrainment Admixture for external concrete surfaces if required. Speak to your local branch sales advisors for more information.
WHAT KIND OF MIXES ARE AVAILABLE?
Design Mixes such as C8/10, C12/15, C16/20, C25/30, C28/35, C32/40

Sand Cement Mixes such as 8:1 , 7:1 , 6:1 , 5:1 , 4:1
ARE THERE ANY HIDDEN COSTS? NO.
HOW DO I CALCULATE THE APPROXIMATE AMOUNT I NEED?
Concrete is sold per cubic meter, often expressed as m3. To calculate this, you should measure the area to be filled, multiplying the length (m) x width (m) x thickness (m) = m3.
THE HANDY CONCRETE CALC.
You will need approx: 1 m3 of concrete.
