Aggregates can…

1. Improve Drainage:

Heavy rainfall can leave your garden waterlogged, harming plants and flooding pathways, patios, or even your foundation. Decorative aggregates act like tiny sponges, creating spaces in the soil for excess water to drain freely. This prevents puddles, promotes healthy root systems for your plants, and helps divert water away from unwanted areas. By incorporating decorative aggregates into your landscaping plan, you can create a more functional and visually appealing garden, even in areas with poor natural drainage.

2. Driveways:

For a strong, long-lasting driveway, look no further than broken or crushed aggregates! Unlike traditional materials like asphalt, which can crack and deteriorate over time, aggregates are incredibly tough. Their interlocking nature creates a highly durable surface that won't break under pressure, making them ideal for withstanding heavy vehicles and constant use. Plus, with a wide range of colours available, you can create a driveway that perfectly complements your home's exterior, adding value and ‘curb appeal’ to your property.

Wondering what is the best aggregate to use for a driveway? We recommend our Kemnay Granite Crushed Aggregates for a classic look or the Speyside Chippings to warm up the colour of your driveway.

3. Pond Edging:

Adding a border of decorative stones around your pond isn't just about aesthetics – it offers a practical solution as well! These stones create a clean, finished look that complements your water feature, but they also play a vital role in erosion control. The weight and placement of the stones help hold the soil in place, preventing the edges of your pond from crumbling or washing away with heavy rain or runoff. Remember, when choosing these decorative companions for your pond, opt for aggregates free from lime-based materials. Lime can disrupt the delicate pH balance of your pond's ecosystem, potentially harming your aquatic plants and fish.

We recommend our range of Scottish Pebbles for pond edging, as they are made from natural stone and help bring out the colour of your water feature.

4. Suppressing Weeds:

Weeds can be a constant eyesore in any garden. Decorative aggregates offer a natural and effective way to combat them. While a landscaping membrane placed underneath is certainly helpful, the real weed-fighting power lies in the layer of aggregates themselves. The dense cover they create significantly reduces the amount of sunlight reaching the soil surface. This sunlight deprivation hinders weed seed germination and weakens existing weeds, making it difficult for them to establish or survive. Combined with a weed membrane, decorative aggregates create a powerful double-layered defence against unwanted weed growth, keeping your garden looking neat and tidy with minimal maintenance.

To suppress weeds, we would recommend slate chippings due to the fact they block out the most sunlight and make it difficult for weeds to produce. Take a look at our modern Graphite Slates for your next project!

5. Garden Paths:

A path made from decorative aggregates is an aesthetic and cost-effective way to add a touch of personality to your garden. These stones can handle heavy foot traffic and harsh weather, without cracking or breaking down. Plus, with a wide variety of colours and sizes available, you can design a path that perfectly complements your garden's style. The best part? Maintaining a decorative aggregate path is simple – just a quick raking now and then keeps it looking sharp for years to come.

Our favourite aggregates to use for pathways have to be the Corennie Red Chips, as they are sourced right here in Aberdeenshire and are made from red granite.

How To Lay Decorative Aggregates

Thinking of laying your own chuckies? We've got you covered! Here’s our easy step-by-step guide to laying decorative aggregates.

  • Excavate your area: Dig out the soil to create a level base for your aggregates. For most applications, aim for a depth of 2-3 inches (5-7.5 cm).
  • Edge it in: For a clean finish and to help contain the aggregates, consider installing edging made from plastic, wood, or brick. Check out some of our edging solutions here
  • Lay down the weed membrane: This prevents weeds from popping through and keeps your project low-maintenance. Secure the edges with landscape staples.
  • Add a base layer (optional): For improved drainage and stability, consider a 1-inch (2.5 cm) layer of sharp sand. You can smooth this out with a rake for a nice, even surface!
  • Time for the aggregates! Pour your chosen decorative stones over the prepared area. Spread them evenly with a rake to achieve your desired depth (typically 2-3 inches / 5-7.5 cm).
  • Top it off: Gently tamp down the aggregates with a plate compactor or the back of a flat shovel to create a firm surface.
  • Finishing touches: Add any borders or edging details you like. Top up any areas that seem sparse and rinse off the aggregates if needed.
