Grey Granite Stone for your Garden

The Famous Aberdeen Granite

The Granite Industry in Aberdeen has a rich and long history dating back to the late 1700s. Aberdeen is known for its abundant supply of high-quality granite. The industry started with the extraction of stone from local quarries, such as Kemnay Quarry, and the crafting of simple objects such as gravestones and building materials. As the demand for granite increased, so did the sophistication of the industry, with the development of new techniques for cutting and shaping the stone.

By the 1800s, Aberdeen's granite industry had become one of the largest in the world, producing monuments, buildings, and other structures both in Scotland and abroad. Despite facing challenges such as the decline of traditional industries and increased competition from abroad, the granite industry in Aberdeen continues to thrive and remains a key part of the region's history and economy.

Kemnay Quarry was opened in 1830 by John Fyfe, an Aberdonian, who forged a career in the quarrying and stone extraction business. Kemnay Granite features across the United Kingdom in structures such as the Thames Embankment, Cenotaph in London, Forth Bridge, Marischal College in Aberdeen and many more. Now closed to extraction, Kemany Quarry remains the production location for walling product Fyfestone.

The Kemnay Grey Granite stone widely renowned for its sparkling grey colour and its angular shape. Kemnay Grey Granite is quarried from the same seam of granite as the original Kemnay Quarry in Aberdeenshire.

The Grey decorative stone is ideally suited for a wide range of different applications, such as garden paths, driveway stones, pot toppers, ground cover and planting areas. The creation of decorative garden features including pergolas, arbours and garden buildings are also made highly impactful with this chipping.

The stone has been crushed and screened down to a suitably sized 14mm stone, graded from 10-14mm in size. This is acheived through a series of processes of screening the stone to only select the highest quality correctly sized stone.

This product can be laid at any depth however for garden and driveway applications it is best laid between 40mm and 60mm in depth. This will provide sufficient ground cover and will withstand foot traffic or vehicle traffic. It is adviseable to lay this product on a good quality weed control fabric, such as Plantex. If using this for vehicle areas with high use, it may be best to consider a stabilisation product such as Grass Grid.

A full bulk bag will cover approximately 10-12m² at a depth of 50mm.

Approximately three small bags required to cover 1m² at a depth of 50mm
